Travel to Learn Spanish and Experience Hispanic Culture

Are you looking for a way to hone your Spanish language skills? Are you a beginner, but can't bear the thought of sitting in a classroom? Or perhaps you're a student looking for a way to pick up credits and travel the world at the same time, imbibing the Hispanic culture and seeing the sights.

Overseas language vacations may be just what you need. You can learn Spanish while immersed in the Hispanic culture, hear native speakers using the language in the context of everyday life and develop a well-tuned ear for correct pronunciation. Better yet, you can learn to "think in Spanish" instead of stopping to think of the English translation for phrases and sentences.

Travel Beyond Spain

Any student of Spanish is bound to yearn for a vacation in Spain, but you can think more globally when seeking a Spanish-language destination. While European travel is enormously appealing and you can find great deals on airfares to Europe, you certainly have other options for inexpensive travel.

In particular, agencies that specialize in foreign language travel can help you plan a unique language vacation by:

  • recommending exotic destinations where you can experience a Hispanic culture but where your travel dollars go further
  • arranging room and board with a host family where you can save by avoiding the more expensive hotels and resorts
  • organizing group travel if you're part of a language vacation tour group
  • arranging for tutors and formalized instruction as part of the package
  • combining your foreign language travel with other options such as hiking, ecotourism, surfing or a beach vacation.
Spanish is spoken in so many Central and South American countries that your vacation options can be as varied as the climate. You can bask on the beaches of Costa Rica and Belize, or you can tramp through the Chilean mountain snows or ski the Andes.

Why Spanish?

Opportunities for bilingual English/Spanish speakers abound in the United States. In fact, many jobs in California and Texas require fluency in Spanish. Are you thinking of specialized professions like translation, diplomatic travel or immigration law? Fluency in written and spoken Spanish opens many doors.

Speaking Spanish and understanding Spanish and Hispanic cultures can also help you land some interesting overseas jobs. While immigration requirements may be stringent for some countries, you stand a better chance of working in a foreign country if you speak the language and have marketable skills that may be lacking in that country. You might consider teaching English in a Spanish-speaking country or becoming a member of the foreign press. Knowing two or three languages can be a great asset.

If career goals have nothing to do with your quest for a Spanish language vacation, you may be attracted to the rich Hispanic culture, history and art forms. Spanish architecture, literature, dance and cultural traditions are certainly fascinating. Certainly, Mexican art and culture continue to have a great influence on the American southwest.
